BDJ Box #illbethere Day 14: Best Beauty Tip from Bestie

on March 16, 2014

When you skimp on sleep, it shows on your face. Tired skin sags, bags, and loses its luster. Medically speaking lack of sleep causes blood vessels to dilate, causing the look of dark circles, and sleepily rubbing your eyes makes it worst. Your skin, and your whole body, goes into repair mode when you sleep. So sleep is essential to keep you healthy and beautiful (both physically and mentally), thus the term “beauty sleep”.

Back in highschool, I used to have difficulty sleeping being an insomniac myself. So back then I used to look like a dishivelled mess with dark eye bags to match. Fortunately, my Bestie shared her fool proof sleeping rituals. She asked me to take a hot bath before I head to bed then if possible listen to white noise or relaxation music. Thankfully they worked! It appears that raising our body temperature late in the evening configures our body to fall into a bedtime facilitating sleep. And listening to white noise or nature sounds like the ocean and forest relaxes you and is soothing for sleep. Avoid listening to loud or soft music with lyrics as this will keep your brain active preventing you from sleeping. Worst is, you might end up waking to a migraine in the morning.

Here are some other tips I found real helpful in catching those Zzzz’s:
1. Sleep in complete darkness
     – Studies show that the tiniest bit of light can disrupt the circadian rhythm (a daily rhythmic activity cycle, based on 24-hour intervals often referred to as the body clock) and pineal gland’s production of melatonin (regulates the sleep–wake cycle by chemically causing drowsiness and lowering the body temperature) and serotonin (can regulate mood, appetite, and sleep.. referred to as the “happy hormones” in the medical society).

2. Read a pleasureable and slow-paced book
     – Avoid reading anything over-stimulating like mystery or suspense novels as this will excite you and entice you to read more preventing you from sleeping.

3. Keep a journal
     – It’s healthy to write your thoughts before bed. Keeping a diary organizes your thoughts and gets them settled in so they won’t be active. (I use my BDJ planner for this)

4. Wear an eyemask
     – Use this to simulate item number 1. This comes real handy to BPO peeps working on graveyard shifts. Wearing an eyemask deceives your body into thinking it’s night time, thus promoting sleep.

That’s it for me! Ü
